Ah, those nostalgic ...

Ah, those nostalgic, naïve, innocent days when the idea of a "Catholic League of Decency" wasn't regarded as an oxymoron.

What people today ...

What people today would not understand is that at the time those cartoons were never intended for children, they were intended for the adult movies playing in the theaters, there was no TV back then. People went to see a Marilyn Monroe movie and this cartoon was the pre-show appropriate for the intended audience at that time. Cartoons for children were created when TV became a popular in homes.

Actually, some ...

Actually, some people *were* offended by Betty Boop. Her cartoons were condemned by the Catholic Legion of Decency. She was seen as representative of flappers, young women in the 1920s who dressed and danced provocatively, rode around with boys in automobiles, smoke, drank, and were more open about their sexuality. Betty was a flapper, and was often being pursued by dirty old men, which would make her cartoons objectionable to many still today. In 1932 Hollywood passed the Hays Code, a code of self-censorship, to avoid government censorship, in response to objections over various controversial content in film. Betty was altered - no longer a flapper, longer dress, eventually given a puppy, etc. But she was still pretty awesome, even in her later years.

DEM LEGS. man. only thing i like bout Betty Boop

Her Caricature ...

Her Caricature represented a Flapper as they called them back in the mid 1930's. She very reavling dresses and they always accentuated her curvy figure. Despite having been toned down in the mid-1930s as a result of the Hays Code to appear more demure, she became one of the best-known and popular cartoon characters in the world. I love her and always will. She is and always will be an Iconic Symbol. I never get tired watching Betty Boop cartoons. She paved the way for women characters in cartoons, and really broke the mold for women in show business who wanted to be like her.
